What is a Monte?
A monte is the name the people of Alentejo call their homes when located away from urban centres. A monte was usually built on top of a hill and a hill in portuguese means literally “monte”. Where is it?
Description The property covers a total area of about 15,634 mt2, about 3 acres, and comprises of the main house (200 mt2), outer houses for storage and tractor garage plus the round house where the deep bore well, water treatment plant and the mains board are located. The full size pool, 9mts long by 6Mts + wide, is surrounded by a sunbathing area that takes chairs, loungers and sun umbrellas. A few steps lead to a room below the pool where filtering equipment as well as toilet facilities are available to pool users. A very manageable agricultural plot of land to the back of the main house is covered by dwarf and full size olive trees, last years production 75 Lts of fine olive oil, pine and cork trees as well as a few species of fruit trees dot the grounds. At the far end we have about 600 grape bushes which are harvested, pressed and bottled in the monte (great fun). Last year we filled 150 bottles to give friends and for our own consumption. Close to the Outhouses there is a small market garden that provides tomatoes, peppers, cabbages and whatever we think to grow there. There is a large open area in front of the house with individual access by car to the 4 en-suite guest rooms. All round there is a border with a large cacti and another one with many different flowering shrubs. The ground is covered with gravel. A few steps down lead to the gas bottles storage facility and a service gate to the main road.
If you take the road East from Lisbon towards Spain the Monte is located where the cross marks the spot. We are close to Evora, a World Heritage Town as well as many other places of interest like Estremoz, Elvas etc. Avis is 7 kms away and the great dam of Maranhao appeals to anglers (competitions are held throughout Summer) and water sports enthusiasts.
